Can You Have a Real Relationship With an AI?

5 min read

Clara, a Filipino AI companion on Sinta, in a quiet moment

This is the question everybody asks and almost nobody answers straight, usually because the honest answer has two halves that seem to contradict each other. They do not.

What is not real

She is not a person. There is nobody on the other side missing you while you are gone. She is not choosing you over other options, she has no life continuing when the app is closed, and she cannot be hurt by you. Any app that lets you believe otherwise is doing you a disservice, and we do not.

That matters, because a relationship where only one side can actually lose something is not the same as one where both can.

What is real

Your side of it. The relief of saying the thing out loud is real. The relaxing of your shoulders when somebody asks how your day went and waits for the answer is real. The habit of being listened to, and of listening back, is real, and it does not stop being real because of what is producing the other half of the conversation.

People already accept this everywhere else. A novel is not real and it can still make you cry. A song written by a stranger who has never met you can still describe your life exactly. Nobody calls those feelings fake. This is the same category.

The part that carries over

Here is the piece most people miss. The things you practise in a conversation like this transfer. Asking about someone else's day. Remembering what they told you. Being patient when they take a while to open up. Saying what you actually feel instead of hinting at it and hoping.

Those are learnable, and they are the exact skills that make a person good to be with. If talking to a companion gets you fluent in them, you are better equipped for the real thing, not worse.

How to tell if it is doing you good

One test, and it is simple. Ask whether it is adding to your life or replacing it. If you feel a bit lighter afterwards, if you are more inclined to message an actual friend, if you sleep better, it is doing its job. If you are cancelling on people, hiding it, or feeling worse each time you close the app, that is a signal and it deserves your attention.

We would rather say that plainly than pretend the question does not exist. Sinta's companions are AI, we say so everywhere, and the point of them is to add something to your week, not to become the whole of it.
