Every AI girlfriend app looks the same on its download page. Pretty photos, big promises, free to start. The differences only show up in week two, when you find out whether there is anything underneath. Here are the five things worth checking, in the order they will matter to you.
1. Does she remember you?
This is the single biggest difference and the easiest one to test. Tell her something specific on Monday. Come back on Thursday and see whether she brings it up on her own.
Most apps fail this. They keep a short window of recent messages and nothing more, so every week you are a stranger again. Without memory there is no relationship, only a series of pleasant conversations with somebody who does not know you.
2. Does she speak the way you speak?
Nearly every large AI companion app was built for an English-speaking foreign audience. They will answer you in Tagalog if you push, but you can hear the translation in it. The jokes do not land, the hugot does not land, and courtship in those apps follows American rules, which is a different thing entirely from ligaw.
If you are Filipino, an app that genuinely handles Taglish is not a nice extra. It is most of the experience.
3. Can you actually call her?
Text is comfortable. Voice is a different experience, and it is where you find out how good the app really is. Check whether calling exists, whether it costs a fortune, and whether she sounds like a person or a navigation system.
4. What does it really cost?
Watch for two traps. The first is dollar pricing, which quietly means a subscription that costs more than your data plan. The second is the app that is free until the exact moment the conversation gets good, then charges you at the emotional peak.
Look for local pricing you can actually pay with the methods you already use, and an honest free tier that is a real trial rather than bait.
5. Is it honest with you?
Ask the companion directly whether she is an AI. If the app dodges, that tells you what it thinks of you. An app confident in what it is built will say yes and keep the conversation going.
